Learn Everywhere - including at Home!

Hello FMS Students and Families! (The NEW-est content will be highlighted in blue)!

I will miss you while school is out. But we can still keep learning! I listed some of the best resources I have found below...all FREE & high quality, from sources I trust. I will keep adding to this list while we are apart. NOTE: Parents/guardians should work with students to make sure the material and content is a good match for your grade level:

  • NEW Maine author Lynn Plourde is keeping a list of events/opportunities offered by Maine authors here
  • Pre-recorded Children's Book Videos Children's Author Kate Messner has curated a a list of videos from author/illustrators reading first chapters, offering a drawing lesson and more. See more videos from Authors Everywhere. And more picture book read aloud resources from author/educator Pernille Ripp.
  • Live Author/Illustrator Events Kid Reading Advocate (and kid) Olivia Van Ledtje (@thelivbits) is keeping a master list of authors and illustrators who will be doing live read alouds (or draw-alongs) on different platforms. So many great authors whose books are in FMS's library! Other resources too.
  • Skype a Scientist is just what it sounds like. Find a topic of interest to you and a scientist will meet with you for a video chat (doesn't necessarily have to be on Skype.) Normally, they match with classrooms but have just opened up to families! My niece and nephews and I are going to do one together!
  • The Daily STEM lists offline (no computer required) science, technology, engineering and math activities. Over 100 ideas for fun ways to learn about STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) at home, including movies to binge! NO INTERNET REQUIRED.
  • Drawing Activities Illustrator Jarrett Lerner has lots of activities up on his website, including "Finish the comic!" A printer would be nice, but you can work around it.
  • Notebooking Activities will be offered live, daily by author and writing teacher Amy Ludwig VanDerwater
  • Scholastic Learn at Home - Four daily activities (five days available now) - each centers around an engaging video or story.
  • Pixel Art template - pixel art is a big hit in Library class. Here is a fresh template.
  • I Survived series author Lauren Tarshis is reading aloud "I Survived the Sinking of the Titanic" on her YouTube channel
  • Ms. Newkirk started a Padlet for us all to post pictures answering the question: "What is outside your window?"
  • Stem-related live streams - fish, penguins, monkeys, oh my!  (YouTube playlist)
  • Audible Stories - FREE audio books, organized by age level
  • Wanna play a game? Make a copy and share with a friend - play Connect Four, Tic Tac Toe and Dots on Google Slides.
  • Novel Effect - combines read-alouds with background music/sound effect!
And don't forget you can access FREE ebooks and audiobooks from our very own Patten Free Library.
